How do you decide what is essential technological change in your business? Many large businesses are still struggling to expunge legacy software, and doing so is costly, time-consuming and can have a huge impact on business. How do you know what to do first? I would argue that you need to decide what makes the difference to your bottom line and drives your business forward.

Whilst looking to innovate and keep pace with you competitors, it is worth making sure your current state of technology meets the status quo. Here are some key areas that every business should have addressed (or at the very least, implement in 2018). From there you are well placed to move forward at speed in a modern environment. The future is now.

1. You still manage your own datacenter.

This may not be relevant for all companies who have a specific need to manage their own datacenter, but any company who is not leveraging the benefits of cloud computing for storage and internal services are falling behind. There is a huge operational overhead in managing your own datacenter, increasing costs, exposing yourself to more downtime, and the cloud is quicker and easier to expand when required. This is a no brainer.

2. You are not storing usage data of your users.

In a world where data has the ability to mitigate risk, drive direction, and alert potential shortcomings in an operation, any company would be foolish to not take advantage of analytics and usage reporting.

3. You have no internal messaging apart from email.

Email has become a source of internal spam and verbose messaging across business. I’m sure you’ve all be placed on email chains with 30 people CC’d, when only 2 people need to be included. Internal chat tools like Symphony or Slack can help remove the noise, and be efficient with your comms.

4. You are still using offline processes

If you’re still using physical paper for sign off process, or physical inboxes and outboxes, you are living in the wrong decade. Any offline processes foster error, are inefficient and introduce challenges at scale. You can build your own digital products to manage processes, like we have done for Gap, or use digital tools to increase efficiency, integrity and provide a consistent audit.

5. Your website doesn’t work on mobile phones or tablets

Everything must be available on mobile now. Google will actually punish you and not index your site if it’s not responsively designed (mobile-friendly). For most services, mobile is now the prefered device over desktop, and this is still increasing. If you are not providing accessibility to this market, you are losing.

6. Your website uses flash and not HTML5

Although 5-10 years ago, Flash was one of the only ways to create a great interactive site. This is now longer the case and support for Flash on mobile devices is not there at all, further to point 5. If your site is using Flash and not using HTML5, it’s a clear sign that it’s out of date and needs and update.
